Pine trees have long been familiar to Japanese people. Some opinions say that the name (Matsu) comes from “waiting for (matsu)/worshiping (matsuru) God”. It has the widest distribution range of any conifer, from tropical Indonesia to cold Arctic. We can see the trees not only in mountains but also near the sea. It is because pine trees are resistant to salt and has played a role as a windbreak forest.
